San Cristóbal de las Casas is a bustling colonial city nestled among mountains in the state of Chiapas. San Cristobal de las Casas Cathedral
The most important religious building to see in San Cristóbal de las Casas is its cathedral, a wonderful colonial-style temple that began construction in 1528. Its facade perfectly combines baroque, Mudéjar, and neoclassical elements, with the use of ocher and reddish tones being particularly impressive.
Santo Domingo de Guzmán Temple
Competing in beauty with the Cathedral, the Church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán is one of the most beautiful sites to visit in San Cristóbal de las Casas. Many experts agree that it is the ultimate expression of Chiapas baroque, with a spectacular pink facade adorned with indigenous angels, vegetal motifs, mermaids, and saints, among many other details.
Amber Museum
The state of Chiapas boasts one of the largest reserves of amber in the world, which has been exploited since pre-Hispanic times. The Amber Museum, located in the former La Merced Convent, showcases samples of this amber. It is the only museum in the continental Americas dedicated entirely to the study and exhibition of amber.
Sumidero Canyon
Located approximately 90 minutes away from the city, the Sumidero Canyon National Park is one of the most powerful tourist attractions in the state of Chiapas and one of the most impressive excursions you can take an adventure on from San Cristóbal. The river is navigable, and along its banks, you can observe endangered species such as river crocodiles, spider monkeys, and ocelots.
San Juan Chamula
This mysterious Tzotzil town, located 10 km from San Cristóbal de Las Casas, is one of the most magical and curious places in the state of Chiapas. In its streets, you can feel the divine mingling with the pagan, as this town maintains an authentic religious, cultural, and social syncretism. The town is composed of three neighbourhoods, each with its own cemetery presided over by gigantic crosses.
Zinacantán
Known as the "Town of Flowers and Textiles" in Chiapas, Zinacantán is situated in a valley surrounded by a mosaic of colours. The vast majority of the population is Tzotzil Maya, a heritage they proudly display in their clothing, language, and traditions. Historically, it has been an important point of exchange and commerce.
Rancho Nuevo Caverns Ecotourism Park
Located 15 km from San Cristóbal, this natural space represents a major tourist attraction for the region. The most important feature of the park is its caverns, a network of caves over 10 km long and reaching depths of up to 550 meters, with a single entrance and discovered in 1947. In addition to the caves, the park also offers other activities for visitors, including horseback riding, zip lines, wildlife sightings, and various restaurants where you can enjoy local cuisine.
